Dhoni's New Role and Focus

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has dismissed rumors suggesting he is the hidden decision-maker for the Chennai Super Kings, even after passing the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Instead, Dhoni emphasized his commitment to evolving his game and techniques to remain relevant in the IPL.

In a conversation with 'JioStar' following CSK's recent four-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians, Dhoni shared insights about the team's dynamics under Gaikwad's leadership, his personal performance, and the ongoing regional commentary in the league.

He noted, 'Batsmen are now more inclined to take risks. They believe that with the right cricketing shots, they can execute big plays while also improvising their shot selection, whether it’s a reverse scoop against a fast bowler or a sweep against a pacer.'

Dhoni acknowledged the need for adaptation, stating, 'I must also evolve. This is essential for my batting position. Staying relevant is crucial.'

He elaborated on the evolution of T20 cricket, saying, 'The way we approached T20 in 2008 differs significantly from last year's IPL. Previously, pitches had more turn and were two-paced. Now, Indian pitches are much improved and more favorable for batters.'

Leadership Transition and Team Dynamics

At 43, Dhoni, who has led CSK to five IPL championships, officially transferred the captaincy to Gaikwad at the start of the 2024 season. He mentioned that while he does discuss strategies with Gaikwad, he avoids pressuring him to heed his advice.

'Ruturaj has been with us for a while. His temperament is excellent; he remains calm and composed, which were key factors in selecting him for the captaincy,' Dhoni explained.

'Before the tournament began, I told him, 'If I offer advice, it doesn’t mean you must follow it. I will try to step back as much as possible.' Many speculated during the season that I was making decisions behind the scenes,' he recalled.

'In reality, he was responsible for 99 percent of the decisions. The critical choices—like bowling changes and field placements—were all his. I merely assisted him. He managed the players exceptionally well,' he added.

Dhoni's Bond with Kohli and Commentary Insights

Dhoni also spoke about his close friendship with Virat Kohli, a star player for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and a key figure in the national team. He noted that their relationship has evolved into a strong friendship over the years.

'Our exchanges have always been honest—discussing whether a particular strategy was effective or if adjustments were necessary. Initially, it was more of a captain-young player dynamic, but as we interacted more, we became friends,' he shared.

'Now that neither of us holds the captaincy, we have more opportunities to converse before matches,' he added.

The veteran cricketer expressed his approval of the IPL broadcasters' choice to include regional commentary for the popular league.

'Listening to commentary provides an outsider's perspective, sparking new ideas like 'why not try this approach?' which can then be assessed based on intelligence and data to see if it aligns with the team's strategy,' he explained.

'I haven't experienced much regional commentary, but I know that Bhojpuri commentary is very lively. It reminds me of traditional radio commentary, where commentators were deeply engaged. I find that quite fascinating,' he concluded.
