Gurindervir Singh Breaks 100m National Record

Gurindervir Singh made headlines by breaking the men's 100m national record with an impressive time of 10.20 seconds during the Indian Grand Prix 1 held on Friday.

The 24-year-old sprinter from Punjab, representing Reliance, surpassed the previous record of 10.23 seconds, which was set by Manikanta Hoblidhar in October 2023.

Prior to this event, Singh's personal best was 10.27 seconds, achieved in 2021.

Following his remarkable performance, Singh expressed his joy, stating, “I’m extremely happy to have posted a good time in the IGP ahead of the Federation Cup in April.”

He added, “I aimed for a fast race, but breaking the national record was an unexpected bonus. I believe I can perform even better at the Federation Cup scheduled for April 21-24 in Kochi.”

Singh's primary focus this season is to excel at the Asian Athletics Championships, which will take place in Gumi, South Korea, in May.

Hoblidhar, also from Reliance, finished closely behind Singh with a time of 10.22 seconds, which improved his previous national record by 0.01 seconds in the men’s 100m Final Race D.

Competing in lanes 5 and 6, Singh and Hoblidhar were neck-and-neck throughout the race, but Singh ultimately claimed victory, breaking the earlier national record by 0.03 seconds.

Reliance dominated the event, securing the top three positions, with Amlan Borgohain finishing third at 10.43 seconds.

The trio, along with Animesh Kujur, have consistently been among India's leading 100m sprinters, although Kujur did not participate in this event.

In the women's category, Telangana's Nithya Gandhe emerged as the fastest runner at IGP 1, clocking 11.41 seconds in the 100m race.
