Shubman Gill's Vision for Indian Cricket

In a surprising turn of events, Shubman Gill, who never envisioned himself as the captain of the Indian cricket team, has taken on the role with a clear objective: to cultivate a team environment where every player feels secure and content.

As India embarks on a quest for their first Test series win in England since 2007, the opening match is set to commence in Leeds on June 20.

Gill expressed to a sports channel, "Becoming the captain was never a dream of mine. Beyond the trophies, my priority is to establish a culture where everyone feels secure and happy."

However, he recognizes the challenges that lie ahead.

"Creating a supportive atmosphere can be tough, especially given the fierce competition and the frequency of matches, along with the rotation of different squads. Achieving this would be a significant milestone for me," he remarked.

"Ensuring that players feel confident in their skills and abilities is crucial for any leader. It's one of my top priorities."

Learning from Rohit Sharma's Leadership

Gill acknowledged the influence of Rohit Sharma, who stepped down from Test cricket on May 7, stating that Rohit has paved a clear path for him.

"Rohit may not appear aggressive, but his tactical approach is quite assertive. He communicates effectively with the team before, during, and after matches, clearly outlining his expectations," Gill noted.

He aims to emulate Rohit's leadership style, which prioritizes the team's needs over individual interests.

"Rohit bhai created an environment where even if he was tough on you, it was never personal. That’s a commendable trait to possess," Gill added.

Conversations with Rohit and Insights from Kohli

The 25-year-old revealed that he has discussed the future of the Indian cricket team culture with Rohit.

"We've talked about where we envision the team culture in the next 5, 10, or even 15 years," he shared.

Gill also praised Virat Kohli's proactive leadership style, stating, "Playing under Virat, I admired his quick adaptability during Test matches. If a strategy wasn't working, he would swiftly devise a new plan and communicate it to the bowlers."

Support from Coaches and Personal Reflections

Before stepping into his leadership role, Gill had discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

"They encouraged me to express myself as a leader without imposing unrealistic expectations. However, I hold myself to high standards as both a leader and a player," he explained.

Gill also shared that he kept his captaincy news from his father, his biggest supporter, until it was officially announced.

"I don't think my father ever imagined me as the Indian Test captain. My childhood dreams were simply to play for India and win matches," he recalled.

Adapting to Gambhir's Coaching Style

Having previously experienced Gambhir's coaching style during his time with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, Gill feels prepared to adapt to it at the national level.

"Gautam bhai is very focused and committed, with clear communication about his expectations and the mindset he wants from the players," he stated.

Managing Jasprit Bumrah's Workload

Gill's leadership will be tested as he navigates the workload of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who may not be available for the entire series.

Chief selector Agarkar has indicated that Bumrah's participation will depend on his performance in each match.

"We aim to avoid a fixed mindset regarding his matches. There are numerous factors that can influence whether he plays or not," Gill explained.

He also mentioned that he has yet to formulate a strategy to counter England's aggressive 'Bazball' approach in the upcoming series.

"I prefer not to have preconceived notions about our game plan. They might adopt an aggressive style and lose wickets quickly," he concluded.
