Uthappa's Take on Dhoni's Influence

New Delhi [India], April 9: Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa recently shared his thoughts on MS Dhoni's performance against the Punjab Kings (PBKS), indicating that Dhoni remains a crucial part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) strategy, despite his reduced playing time.

During a discussion on Jio Hotstar, Uthappa emphasized that Dhoni is actively mentoring younger players, equipping them for future challenges and ensuring CSK's competitiveness. He acknowledged Dhoni's enduring batting prowess but noted that the team's focus is on establishing a solid foundation for long-term success.

“I believe MS Dhoni has always shown intent. Even beyond the TATA IPL, he has delegated responsibilities to others, providing them with a clear vision for the future as CSK transitions into a title-contending team. While we all wish to see MS bat higher up the order, the real issue isn't with him,” Uthappa remarked during the Match Centre Live segment on JioHotstar.

In the match, opener Priyansh Arya's first IPL century propelled PBKS to a total of 219 runs, leading to an 18-run victory over the five-time champions CSK.

Dhoni entered the game at No. 5 with 25 balls left and 69 runs needed. The 43-year-old faced a daunting task but managed to impress with a quickfire 27 runs off just 12 balls, including three sixes and a four.

He was dismissed on the first ball of the final over, hitting a full toss straight to Chahal. CSK has struggled this IPL season, losing four out of five matches and has yet to bat first.

Following a modest performance against Delhi Capitals (DC), where he scored 30 runs off 26 balls, Dhoni's recent innings showcased a more aggressive approach.

As the sixth-highest run-scorer in IPL history, Dhoni has accumulated 5,346 runs at an average of 39.31 and a strike rate exceeding 137, with 24 fifties and a top score of 84. In IPL 2025, he has scored 103 runs in five innings, averaging 51.50 with a strike rate of over 153.73, with his highest score being 30.
