Odisha Prepares for Rising Temperatures: What You Need to Know

Intense Heatwave Expected in Odisha
Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to experience another surge in temperatures, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting an increase of 2–3°C in daytime heat over the next few days. This warning follows a period of elevated temperatures that has already affected many regions.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions and high humidity, which will remain active until May 14. This comes after a brief respite last week when isolated thunderstorms and showers temporarily lowered temperatures in certain areas. However, with clear skies and a significant drop in nor’wester activity, temperatures are climbing once more.
On Thursday, Boudh recorded the highest temperature at 39.8°C, closely followed by Sambalpur at 39.6°C, Bolangir at 39.2°C, and Titlagarh at 39°C. The capital city, Bhubaneswar, also faced discomfort with a temperature of 37.6°C, contributing to the rising unease among residents.
Meteorologists have linked the temperature rise to the lack of cloud cover, which allows direct sunlight to heat the ground. While isolated thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are anticipated in districts like Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and the southern areas of Malkangiri and Koraput, these occurrences are expected to be brief and will not significantly alleviate daytime heat.
Western Odisha is predicted to be the most affected area, with conditions likely worsening from May 10. Coastal regions will continue to endure hot and humid weather, with little relief even at night.
The IMD has forecasted above-normal heatwave days throughout May, raising alarms about the health risks for vulnerable groups. Health officials are advising the public to limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and dress appropriately to avoid heat-related health issues.
Special guidelines are being developed for schoolchildren, the elderly, outdoor workers, and others at higher risk. The state government is actively monitoring the situation and is expected to release additional recommendations to mitigate the impact of the heatwave.
Additionally, a swell surge warning has been issued for fishermen along the Odisha coast, particularly in Jagatsinghpur, Puri, and Kendrapara districts, which will remain in effect for the next five days.
