Overview of the Pune-Nashik Expressway

The Pune-Nashik Industrial Expressway, which links Pune, Ahilyanagar, and Nashik districts, is gaining traction, while the semi-high-speed rail initiative continues to encounter obstacles. The proposal for this expressway is on the verge of being submitted for governmental approval, promising to cut the travel duration from Pune to Nashik from five hours down to just three.

The final design of this expressway received government approval in February of the previous year. This route will also connect with the Surat-Chennai highway, providing advantages for travelers from various states. The detailed project report (DPR) and feasibility study have been finalized, and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is preparing to present it to the government for final endorsement.

Project Details and Economic Impact

Spanning 133 kilometers, this expressway is projected to be completed within three years, necessitating the acquisition of 1,545 hectares of land. The route will traverse through Khed, Shirur, Ambegaon, and Junnar in Pune district, as well as Sangamner taluka in Ahilyanagar district. This project is expected to significantly enhance economic growth in industrial hubs like Ahilyanagar and Nashik.

While the railway project is still pending final approval, the industrial expressway is poised to greatly reduce travel times.

Key Features of the Expressway

The expressway will feature 12 major flyovers constructed over rivers and streams along the route. Additionally, interchanges will be established at nine locations, including Chimbli, Chakan, Pabal (Pune), and Ahilyanagar, Rajuri, Khandarmal, Sakur, Machi, and Kasare (Nashik). These interchanges will facilitate easier access to and from the expressway, with a connection to Shirdi Marg.

Utilization of Railway Land

In June of the previous year, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar convened a meeting regarding the project. He instructed officials to explore the possibility of utilizing land designated for the semi-high-speed rail for the expressway's construction. This investigation is currently underway, and a report is anticipated soon.

Project Cost Estimates

As per Ashok Bhalkar, Chief Engineer of the Road Development Authority, the projected cost for this 133 km long industrial expressway is estimated at Rs 28,429 crore. Construction is set to commence once cabinet approval is granted.
