Significance of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

During the 123rd episode of 'Mann ki Baat' on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his heartfelt wishes to all the pilgrims embarking on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. He emphasized the pilgrimage's significance, noting that Kailash Mansarovar holds a sacred place in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. "The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has auspiciously resumed after a long hiatus. This site is revered as the dwelling of Lord Shiva and is central to faith across various traditions," PM Modi remarked.

Yatra Resumes After Five-Year Hiatus

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which had been on hold for five years, officially restarted on June 20 with a ceremonial flag-off by Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur at Nathula Pass. The inaugural group consists of 33 pilgrims, along with two nodal officers and a doctor from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), totaling 36 individuals.

Diplomatic Efforts Behind the Yatra's Resumption

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) previously announced that the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a vital pilgrimage for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers, will continue in 2025. The pilgrimage had been suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and tense India-China relations, but is now being revived amid improving diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Meetings Leading to the Yatra's Restart

Discussions about the Yatra's resumption began during a Special Representatives' meeting in Beijing in December 2024, where India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met with China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi. A subsequent visit by India's Foreign Secretary to Beijing in January 2025 facilitated this year's pilgrimage plans. On June 27, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also met with Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Don Jun during the SCO Defence Ministers Meeting in Qingdao, emphasizing the need for both nations to maintain positive relations.

PM Modi's Encouragement for Pilgrims

PM Modi expressed his hopes for a safe pilgrimage, stating, "I wish all the fortunate devotees embarking on various Yatras the best. I also commend those working to ensure these Yatras are successful and safe, embodying a spirit of service." He also mentioned the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, starting on July 3, which is a significant pilgrimage for Hindus, drawing thousands to the Amarnath cave in Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, he highlighted the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri, Odisha, which attracts millions of devotees, showcasing India's rich cultural heritage.

Cultural Unity Through Pilgrimages

PM Modi noted that the Amarnath Yatra is set to commence soon, coinciding with the holy month of Saavan. He remarked on the recent Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, stating, "These Yatras exemplify the spirit of 'Ek Bharat-Shrestha Bharat', reflecting India's diverse cultural and spiritual traditions and promoting unity among its people." He stressed the importance of devotion, dedication, and discipline during these pilgrimages, which not only yield spiritual rewards but also foster community and shared values.
