Odisha's DGP Takes Action Against Narcotics Smuggling on Railways

Addressing Railway Security Challenges
Bhubaneswar: The Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, YB Khurania, has instructed officials to pinpoint railway stations that are being exploited for the smuggling of drugs, including ganja and opium, via trains.
During a recent meeting of the Railway Security Committee, the DGP elaborated on various security issues concerning the railways.
"Criminals have been known to transport narcotics like ganja and opium through trains at different times. The DGP has mandated immediate identification of the stations involved in such activities," stated a police announcement.
Khurania emphasized the critical need for installing CCTV cameras at all railway stations that currently lack surveillance systems.
He also advocated for extending the duration of CCTV recordings to bolster monitoring efforts.
Pointing out that numerous railway lines traverse Maoist-affected regions, the DGP acknowledged the potential threat of rebel attacks on railway facilities.
"In light of this, he has instructed the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) to take prompt action," the statement added.
The meeting also addressed incidents of stone pelting on moving trains and urged officials to identify the culprits and enforce strict penalties.
Additionally, discussions were held regarding providing cybersecurity training for GRP personnel.
The DGP further directed officials to intensify efforts against pickpockets, thieves, and robbers.
With the Rath Yatra approaching, he ordered that images of known criminals be displayed in public areas and their activities closely monitored.
Moreover, the DGP proposed that the railways, railway police stations, and the Railway Protection Force collaborate to combat human trafficking via trains.
