NIA Charges Myanmar-Based ULFA (I) Leader in Assam Independence Day Blast Conspiracy

NIA Takes Action Against ULFA (I) Leadership
New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed charges against three individuals, including Paresh Baruah, the leader of the banned Myanmar-based group ULFA (I), for their involvement in a plot to execute several IED explosions in Assam during last year's Independence Day celebrations, officials reported on Saturday.
Known by various aliases such as Paresh Asom, Kamruj Zaman Khan, and others, Baruah serves as the self-proclaimed Commander-in-Chief of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I).
Alongside Baruah, Abhijit Gogoi and Jahnu Boruah have also been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Explosive Substances Act in a Guwahati court, as stated by the NIA.
The trio was connected to the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that were placed by the group at Dispur Last Gate in Guwahati, part of a larger ULFA (I) scheme aimed at instigating multiple explosions throughout Assam to disrupt the Independence Day festivities in 2023, according to the agency.
The NIA, which assumed control of the investigation in September 2024, discovered that the IEDs were intended to inflict harm, destroy property, and undermine the unity, integrity, and sovereignty of India, while instilling fear among the populace.
