Bail Granted to C Ngunlianchunga

Aizawl, Jun 18: C Ngunlianchunga, the sole Congress MLA in Mizoram's 40-member Assembly, received bail from a Special Court on Tuesday under the Prevention of Corruption Act. This follows his charge-sheeting in a corruption case associated with a road project in the Lawngtlai district.

The charges stem from an incident during his time as the Chief Executive Member of the Lai Autonomous District Council in 2013.

This case revolves around the alleged misappropriation of funds allocated by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) for the construction of a bypass in Lawngtlai town, which is situated near the Myanmar border.

During the hearing before Special Judge F Rohlupuia, Ngunlianchunga's lawyer, Lalfakawma, presented arguments for bail, emphasizing that the investigation had concluded and the charge sheet was already filed.

The defense also pointed out the legislator's permanent residency in Mizoram and his declining health due to an ongoing battle with rectal cancer. Lalfakawma argued that an arrest at this preliminary stage could unjustly damage his public reputation.

After reviewing the case details, the court decided to grant bail. Ngunlianchunga was released on a bond of Rs 2 lakh with a dependable surety.

The next court appearance is scheduled for July 22.
