India's Delegation Heads to the US

India's All-Party Delegation is gearing up for an important visit to the United States following Operation Sindoor. Notably, this delegation will encounter a Pakistani team led by Bilawal Bhutto, who will also be in the US concurrently. Shashi Tharoor, the leader of India's delegation and a Congress MP, expressed optimism about effectively communicating India's stance on terrorism.

In a conversation with a news outlet, Tharoor acknowledged the challenges posed by the US media landscape but emphasized that those who oppose terrorism and are invested in South East Asia will be receptive to India's message. He noted, "In Washington, we will witness the unique situation of both delegations being present at the same time, which could heighten interest in our discussions."

Tharoor pointed out that while India's narrative may not dominate the US media's agenda, there are opportunities to convey its message. He stated, "The media environment in America is quite competitive, and our story might not be the primary focus. However, if we can engage those who are concerned about South Asia and terrorism, we can effectively share our perspective."

The delegation has arranged meetings with key government officials and influential committees that shape public opinion. Tharoor mentioned, "We have scheduled discussions with a wide array of public opinion leaders in Washington, including government officials, legislators, and think tanks that play a significant role in foreign policy."

He highlighted the importance of the US to India in various areas, including defense and intelligence sharing. Tharoor remarked, "The US relationship is crucial for us across multiple dimensions, from trade to defense and intelligence collaboration, as well as our involvement in QUAD and G-20 initiatives."

Tharoor also noted that Pakistan's decision to send its own delegation is strategic, although it is not engaging as many countries as India. He stated, "It's no coincidence that Pakistan has dispatched a delegation, but their focus is narrower compared to ours, targeting only a few key capitals like Washington, Brussels, and London."

While expressing respect for the US, Tharoor refuted claims that the US mediated in the cessation of hostilities, asserting that India has always sought peace. He explained, "We have great respect for the American presidency, but our understanding differs. We did not require persuasion to cease hostilities; we had already made that decision ourselves."

Tharoor reiterated India's commitment to development and peace, stating, "From the outset, we have been clear that we do not wish to prolong conflict. Our actions are solely retributive against terrorism. If Pakistan had not responded, we would not have felt the need to react."

The delegation, led by Shashi Tharoor, includes a diverse group of Members of Parliament, showcasing India's democratic spirit. The team comprises Sarfaraz Ahmad, Ganti Harish Madhur, Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Tejasvi Surya, and Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
