Ravindra Jadeja Reflects on Captaincy After Stellar Performance Against England

Jadeja's Remarkable Display in Second Test
Birmingham [UK], July 4: Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja humorously acknowledged that his chances of taking on a captaincy role have passed, following his impressive batting performance on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston.
Although he played a supporting role to captain Shubman Gill, Jadeja's remarkable innings of 89 runs off 137 balls helped India secure a strong position in the match. During a press conference after the day's play, Jadeja, who is on his third tour of England in a career spanning over 15 years, was asked if he ever considered captaincy. He responded with a smile, saying, “No, that time is gone now.”
Jadeja formed a significant 203-run partnership with Gill, paving the way for India to set a formidable total. His innings ended abruptly when he attempted to pull a fast short ball from Josh Tongue, resulting in a catch to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.
Following Jadeja's exit, Gill continued to dominate, partnering with Washington Sundar to add 144 runs, putting pressure on the English bowlers who began to show signs of fatigue. Joe Root eventually dismissed Sundar for 42 runs off 103 balls, while Gill's impressive innings concluded at 269, contributing to India's total of 587 runs.
In response, England struggled under pressure as Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj made early breakthroughs, dismissing Ben Duckett (0), Ollie Pope (0), and Zak Crawley (19) quickly. Joe Root and Harry Brook managed to stabilize the innings, ending the day with an unbeaten 52-run partnership, bringing England to 77/3.
Looking ahead to Day 3, Jadeja outlined India's strategy, stating, “We are not thinking too far ahead. We need to take 2-3 wickets before lunch tomorrow. If we achieve that, we will be in a strong position. Cricket can be unpredictable with big partnerships, so we won't underestimate the game. We played with great energy today, and we hope for a favorable outcome for India.”
