Realistic Expectations for Change in Jammu and Kashmir

Farooq Abdullah, the president of the National Conference (NC), stated on Thursday that expecting overnight changes from the party-led government in Jammu and Kashmir is unrealistic, as the developmental setbacks of the past decade cannot be rectified instantly.

While addressing a public gathering in the Reshigund area of Kralpora in the Kupwara district of North Kashmir, the former Chief Minister emphasized that the government formed under Omar Abdullah has ushered in an era focused on effective governance with active citizen participation.

He remarked, “A government’s term lasts five years, and it is unrealistic to expect a newly formed government to transform the region overnight. The developmental losses our area has endured over the last decade cannot be fixed in a single stroke. There is no magical solution to rectify these issues.”

Abdullah noted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have faced numerous challenges over the decades. He reiterated the government's commitment to fulfilling all promises made in the party's manifesto.

He added that through continuous efforts and active public involvement, the NC government has established a clear direction aimed at addressing these long-standing challenges.

Despite having a full majority, Abdullah stated that the government does not adopt a unilateral approach in decision-making. He said, “On the contrary, we are strongly committed to inclusivity, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard before formulating policies. With this approach, I am confident that our region will regain momentum, and citizens will witness significant improvements across all sectors.”
