Andre Onana Embraces Challenge of Replacing David de Gea at Manchester United

Onana's Perspective on Pressure
In Mumbai, Maharashtra, Manchester United's goalkeeper Andre Onana has expressed that he does not feel burdened by the expectations of succeeding club icon David de Gea, despite facing criticism from fans and former players.
Onana, who gained recognition for his impressive performances at Inter Milan, has struggled to replicate that form since joining Old Trafford in 2023, leading to backlash over his goalkeeping mistakes.
He has even been labeled one of the 'worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's history.' In April, manager Ruben Amorim benched the Cameroonian against Newcastle United following his errors in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.
Finding Motivation Amidst Criticism
Many supporters feel that Onana does not embody the qualities needed to replace de Gea. However, he remains undeterred, viewing the chance to step into the Spaniard's role as a source of 'extra motivation.'
"I don't feel pressure. It's not pressure; it's extra motivation. We've been in this game long enough to not feel pressured. For me, it's the opposite," Onana stated during a press conference.
"It's my perspective on life. I might be mistaken, but I believe in winning or learning," he added.
Reflections on a Challenging Season
Onana's struggles mirror Manchester United's disappointing performance last season, where they finished 15th in the Premier League, marking their lowest position in the league's history. Their hopes for redemption in the Europa League final were dashed by local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
"It has been a challenging season for all of us. Football is a team sport; we win and lose together. We're not playing tennis. I'm grateful for the learning experience. We faced challenges and remained united as a team, which is what matters most. Now, we must move forward," he remarked.
"Certainly, it was a difficult time for me and my teammates, but that's no excuse. If not today, then tomorrow, or the day after, we must stay positive because life continues," he concluded.
