Selena Gomez Discusses Body Shaming and Its Effects on Mental Health
Selena Gomez Opens Up About Body Image Struggles
Selena Gomez has candidly addressed the detrimental effects of body shaming, expressing that remarks about her weight leave her feeling ‘a bit bitter’. During her recent guest appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty Podcast, she voiced her frustrations regarding the relentless scrutiny surrounding her looks.
“Everyone has something to say,” Gomez remarked, highlighting that women often bear the brunt of body image pressures. The singer and actress, who has been transparent about her battle with lupus, a chronic autoimmune condition, noted that her weight can vary due to her medication. Nevertheless, she stressed the importance of prioritizing her health over societal beauty norms.
“I would prefer to be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are crucial, and I believe they benefit me,” she stated. Gomez also highlighted the double standards in discussions about body image, pointing out that men do not endure the same level of judgment.
“It’s the character that gets scrutinized. It’s about not being white enough or not being Mexican enough… those issues don’t seem to matter for men,” she explained. Gomez clarified that she does not view herself as a victim but aims to shed light on the unrealistic expectations placed on women. “I just think it’s made me a tad bitter,” she confessed.
Additionally, she shared her coping mechanisms for dealing with negative feedback, which include steering clear of social media and concentrating on her mental well-being.
