World Blood Donor Day: A Call to Action

New Delhi, June 14: Union Health Minister JP Nadda emphasized the importance of blood donation, describing it as a straightforward and safe act that can significantly benefit those in need, during the observance of World Blood Donor Day on Saturday.

This annual event, held on June 14, aims to promote awareness about the necessity for safe blood and blood products while expressing gratitude to voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving contributions.

Nadda encouraged individuals to dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding blood donation and to participate actively in this noble cause.

“World Blood Donor Day unites us to highlight the critical role of blood donation. It saves countless lives globally by aiding those in dire need. Unfortunately, many individuals are deterred by misinformation and fear,” Nadda stated in a message shared on the social media platform X.

“Let’s leverage this day to debunk myths and inspire more individuals to donate. The theme for this year, 'Give Blood, Give Hope: Together We Save Lives,' serves as a reminder that donating blood is not only simple and safe but also profoundly impactful,” he added.

The Union Minister called for collective action for this social initiative, urging everyone to be part of a life-changing movement.

“On this #WorldBloodDonorDay, let’s honor the selfless individuals whose generous actions provide others with a second chance at life. A single donation can create a significant difference. Donate blood and be the reason someone survives,” remarked Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, on X.

The Health Ministry also urged citizens to step forward and donate blood.

In a post on X, the ministry outlined that individuals aged between 18 and 65 years, weighing at least 45 kg, and possessing a hemoglobin level above 12.5 g/dL are eligible to donate blood safely.

World Blood Donor Day commemorates the birth of Karl Landsteiner, the discoverer of the ABO blood group system. The event was first established in 2004 by the World Health Organization (WHO).
