Explained: What is Discard Return and how can one use it?

We all make mistakes, and sometimes, we can't just go back and fix them. The same happens with us while filing Income Tax Return (ITR). We filed a return and then realized there was incorrect information that should not have been filed; There is no turning back. But, for this, the Income Tax Department has devised a solution: the discard option. “Users can avail 'discard' option for ITR filed under 139(1) /139(4)/139(5) if they do not want to verify it. The deletion option is available only to those taxpayers who have filed unverified returns from Assessment Year (AY) 2023-2024.” 'Delete Return' is an attempt to streamline the ITR filing process.

What does skip option mean?
An Income Tax Return (ITR) goes through several stages: it is uploaded, it is checked simultaneously or later, it is processed, and it is viewed. Through the ITR e-filing platform, the Central Board of Direct Taxation (CBDT) allows citizens to dispose of their transferred ITR before check interaction and then document the changed ITR.

For instance, if a citizen needs to file a revised ITR, there was an error in the return he initially submitted. The new option maintains a strategic distance from the pointless course of checking false returns and records revised returns when a citizen finds an error or oversight in the initial documented return of salary before confirmation.

You can use this facility to delete original, amended or late returns that have been filed and are yet to undergo verification to file a new ITR after deleting unverified returns.

You can choose to dispose of ITRs filed after FY 2022-23. However, this option will be accessible as far as possible for recording ITR up to nine months i.e. December 31 from the beginning of the applicable financial year.
