NIA Interrogates Suspected Terrorists in Assam and Tripura Crackdown
NIA's Investigation into Terrorism in Northeast India
Guwahati, Jan 6: Senior officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have initiated questioning of 11 individuals suspected of terrorism, who were detained by the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) during a coordinated operation across Assam and Tripura.
According to police sources, NIA personnel arrived in Guwahati on Monday and have been interrogating those arrested, who were taken into custody during simultaneous raids conducted as part of the STF's Operation Praghat on December 29, 2025.
Additionally, it has been reported that the interrogation will involve other investigative agencies from states such as Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, indicating potential inter-state connections.
The individuals apprehended include Nasim Uddin alias Najimuddin alias Tamim (24), Junab Ali (38), Afrahim Hussain (24), Mizanur Rehman (46), Sultan Mehmud (40), Md Siddique Ali (46), Rasidul Aalam (28), Mahibul Khan (25), Sharuk Hussain (22), Md Dilbar Razak (26), and Jagir Miah (33). Ten of the suspects were arrested in various locations throughout Assam, while Jagir Miah was captured in Tripura.
These arrests have unveiled what law enforcement describes as a well-organized extremist network operating within the Northeast region.
During a press conference held at the Jyoti–Bishnu Kala Mandir in Khanapara on December 30, STF chief Partha Sarathi Mahanta disclosed the existence of a structured network functioning both online and offline, with significant transnational ties.
Mahanta noted that extremist groups, including those associated with the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and the Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK), have been systematically radicalizing supporters through encrypted digital platforms.
“The IMK module was identified through intelligence analysis. It is a Bangladesh-based faction of the JMB,” Mahanta stated, emphasizing that Indian security agencies are vigilantly monitoring jihadi activities in Assam and the broader Northeast based on ongoing intelligence reports.
Highlighting the evolving nature of extremist recruitment, Mahanta remarked that these groups are increasingly utilizing what investigators refer to as “digital jihad.”
The Assam Police confirmed that the initial phase of Operation Praghat has concluded, but additional phases are anticipated.
Investigators continue to pursue leads on further operatives, funding sources, and potential sleeper cells associated with this network, as central agencies intensify their investigations.
