Major Drug Bust Near India-Myanmar Border: Assam Man Arrested
Significant Drug Seizure in Mizoram
Aizawl, Jan 3: Authorities apprehended an individual from Assam and confiscated a substantial quantity of methamphetamine tablets worth over Rs 33.18 crore during a collaborative operation involving the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police close to the India-Myanmar border.
The suspect, Hasan Ali, hailing from Badarpur district in southern Assam, was taken into custody during the operation.
He has been transferred to the custody of Mizoram Police, where he will face charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.
This operation took place on Friday in the Kaifang area of Mizoram’s Saitual district, following reliable intelligence regarding narcotics trafficking.
A defense spokesperson reported that troops observed unusual activity in the area and promptly initiated a search operation.
This search resulted in the discovery of 11.062 kg of methamphetamine tablets, a prohibited psychotropic substance with an estimated international market value of Rs 33.186 crore.
Additionally, a vehicle utilized for trafficking was seized. Both the contraband and the vehicle were handed over to Mizoram Police for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Methamphetamine tablets, often referred to as Yaba or party tablets, are a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine, commonly known as the 'crazy drug.'
Due to its highly addictive properties and severe health risks, this substance is prohibited in India.
In a statement, the Assam Rifles emphasized their ongoing dedication to combating drug trafficking in the border area.
The force highlighted that such coordinated efforts are vital for safeguarding the youth of Mizoram from the detrimental effects of narcotics and maintaining peace and security in the region.
Mizoram has a 510-km unfenced border with Myanmar and a 318-km border with Bangladesh, making it susceptible to cross-border smuggling.
The Chin state of Myanmar, which borders several districts of Mizoram, including Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip, is notorious for being a hub for the trafficking of drugs, wildlife, and other illegal goods.
