Younis Khan Criticizes PCB's Heavy Fine on Naseem Shah: Is It Justified?
Younis Khan Voices Concerns Over PCB's Punishment
Karachi: Younis Khan, the former captain of Pakistan, has expressed his discontent regarding the hefty fine levied on fast bowler Naseem Shah by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He believes that such penalties do not serve the best interests of the players or the sport.
Naseem Shah faced disciplinary action from the PCB after he made sarcastic comments on social media about Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who attended the opening match of the Pakistan Super League at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on March 27.
The PCB's disciplinary committee swiftly concluded its investigation, imposing a significant fine of 20 million rupees on Shah for violating the players' code of conduct.
Younis criticized the fine as excessive, suggesting it could have been avoided altogether.
"After Naseem apologized for his tweet and clarified that his social media manager was responsible, which led to his dismissal, the board could have opted for a warning instead of such a steep penalty," Younis remarked.
He emphasized that such punitive measures only serve to demoralize players.
"The board should prioritize the welfare of its players," he added.
Younis also pointed out that if such serious actions are taken, then selectors and board officials should also face consequences for misleading statements or failures in their responsibilities.
He called on the PCB to reconsider its decision, noting that Shah had shown genuine remorse for his actions.
In response to Shah's tweet, the PCB has implemented new guidelines for all centrally and domestically contracted players, mandating that any social media posts must receive prior approval from the board, particularly those of a political nature.
The PCB has made it clear that any political posts could incur a fine of up to 10 million rupees.
