Yograj Singh Praises MS Dhoni Ahead of IPL 2026 Kickoff
Yograj Singh's High Praise for MS Dhoni
Yograj Singh, the father of former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh, has expressed his admiration for MS Dhoni, the legendary ex-captain of the Chennai Super Kings, as the IPL 2026 season approaches. The tournament is set to commence on Saturday, March 28, with Dhoni leading his team against the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on March 30.
Despite retiring from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni has remained active in the IPL, steering CSK to victories in 2021 and 2023. His role as a mentor and leader has been pivotal for the team. Although there were speculations regarding his retirement after the last IPL season, it has been confirmed that he will participate in IPL 2026.
At 44 years old, Dhoni is gearing up for his 17th season with CSK and his 19th overall in the IPL, continuing to offer his expertise and steady presence on the field.
Yograj's Shift in Perspective on Retirement Talks
Yograj Singh, who has previously criticized Dhoni for impacting Yuvraj's career, has now shifted his stance, praising the former captain ahead of the IPL 2026.
In an interview with a sports outlet, he commended Dhoni's fitness, longevity, and commitment, dismissing any retirement rumors and asserting that Dhoni could easily play for another decade in the IPL.
"I admire him. MS Dhoni should play for another 10 years. He has demonstrated his fitness and discipline. His physical condition is remarkable," Yograj stated.
"The way he is performing, who are we to suggest he retire? Hats off to him for his contributions to cricket," he added.
Dhoni's Resilience Despite Injuries
During IPL 2025, Dhoni faced knee issues, which were acknowledged by CSK's head coach, Stephen Fleming. This injury led him to bat lower in the order, taking on a finisher's role while still providing valuable guidance to the team.
Despite the injury, Dhoni remained behind the stumps throughout the season, showcasing his dedication and resilience.
Age Is Just a Number in Cricket
Yograj Singh also addressed the age factor in cricket, referencing players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He emphasized that performance is what truly matters, and Dhoni continues to demonstrate his worth on the field.
"Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and others may consider retirement, but they need to realize their value. Age is irrelevant if you are performing well," he remarked.
Dhoni, the oldest player in IPL history, continues to excel, proving that experience can surpass age. In the last season, he scored 196 runs at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17 over 14 matches.
However, with the addition of Sanju Samson to the team, it remains uncertain whether Dhoni will play the entire IPL 2026 season or primarily serve as a senior mentor and finisher for CSK. This season may be his last due to age and ongoing knee concerns.
