Wimbledon 2023: Alcaraz and Sinner Set for First-Round Matches

Exciting First-Round Matches at Wimbledon

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is set to begin his Wimbledon journey against the seasoned 38-year-old Fabio Fognini in the opening round. Meanwhile, world number one Jannik Sinner will face fellow Italian Luca Nardi in his first match.

The tournament kicks off on Monday, following the draw that was conducted on Friday. Sinner's quest for his inaugural Wimbledon title may hinge on a potential semifinal showdown with Novak Djokovic, a seven-time champion at this prestigious event.

Djokovic Seeks to Equal Record with Eighth Wimbledon Title

As the top seed, Sinner will compete against Nardi, while Djokovic, seeded sixth—his lowest ranking since 2018—will begin his campaign for a record-equaling eighth Wimbledon title against French player Alexandre Muller, according to the ATP's official website.

Djokovic has previously triumphed over Sinner in both the quarterfinals of the 2022 Wimbledon and the semifinals in 2023. He is projected to meet British number one Jack Draper in the quarterfinals. Draper will start his tournament against Sebastian Baez and may encounter Halle champion Alexander Bublik in the third round.

Alcaraz's Path to Potential Semifinal Against Grand Slam Newcomers

In the lower half of the draw, Alcaraz, currently on an impressive 18-match winning streak, will kick off against Fognini. He may face eighth seed Holger Rune in the quarterfinals, and if victorious, his semifinal opponents could be Oliver Tarvet or Leandro Riedi, both of whom are making their Grand Slam main draw debuts.

Alexander Zverev, ranked third in the world and a three-time major finalist, will begin his campaign against Arthur Rinderknech. He is expected to clash with Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals, with Fritz facing Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in his opening match and holding an 8-5 advantage over Zverev in their head-to-head encounters.
