Will Financial Struggles End the Rugby Dream for Mayurbhanj's Future Stars?
Baripada's Rugby Academy Faces Financial Crisis
Baripada: The Future Star Sports Academy, located in Mayurbhanj district, has gained both national and international acclaim for its efforts in promoting rugby among tribal youth. However, it now faces a dire financial situation that jeopardizes its future.
Established in 2019 with a mere five players, the academy has successfully trained over 50 athletes, primarily from tribal backgrounds, offering them complimentary coaching, accommodation, meals, and equipment. Its athletes have achieved significant success, earning numerous medals at both national and international competitions.
A total of 42 players from this academy have participated in national rugby championships, bringing home three gold medals. Additionally, three players have represented India on the international stage, securing silver medals. The academy has become a symbol of sporting excellence in Odisha, largely due to the unwavering commitment of its founder and coach, Dibya Ranjan Das.
Despite its achievements, the academy's future is now in jeopardy. The lack of government support and dwindling local assistance has made it challenging to provide essential training materials, nutritious meals, and sports equipment. Delays in staff salaries and rent payments have also impacted team morale.
Das expressed his concerns, stating, "We have nurtured many talented players and helped them reach national and international platforms. However, the absence of financial backing has made it incredibly challenging to maintain our efforts. Without support from the government or the community, our continuation is uncertain."
International rugby players Sandhyarani Tudu and Asima Rani Majhi, both alumni of the academy, voiced their worries about the current situation. They remarked, "This academy provided us with the opportunity to dream. However, with the ongoing financial difficulties, our aspirations and those of future players may remain unfulfilled."
While the Mayurbhanj royal family's Mayurbhanj Foundation offers some monthly support, it falls short of covering the academy's operational costs. Bibhudatta Das, a representative of the foundation, stated, "With sufficient financial support, these young athletes could achieve even greater success."
Local social workers and sports advocates have called on the community and authorities to rally behind the academy. They emphasized, "Supporting this institution will not only safeguard a vital sports platform but also empower tribal youth to realize their potential."
District Sports Officer Subhasis Nayak mentioned that the government provides assistance to players competing in national and international events. He added, "We have not received any formal complaints regarding their challenges, but we will investigate the situation and offer necessary support as per regulations."
