Who Will Lead India in T20 Cricket? The Race for Captaincy Heats Up
Mumbai: The Search for India's Next T20 Captain
As the IPL season concludes, the cricket community is abuzz with speculation about who will take over as India's T20 captain. Current captain Suryakumar Yadav's recent struggles with form have raised concerns about his future in the role. Initially, Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson were the frontrunners for the captaincy, but recent developments have shifted the focus.
Sanju Samson had an impressive season with the Chennai Super Kings, scoring two centuries and becoming the team's leading run-scorer. However, his chances of captaining the national team may have diminished due to the team's failure to reach the playoffs and his inconsistent performance as an opener in critical matches.
Three Key Candidates for India's T20I Captaincy
New contenders have emerged in the captaincy race. Shubman Gill, who guided Gujarat to the IPL final, is now a strong candidate. Alongside him, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are also being considered. Sanju's name initially surfaced after his stellar performance in the T20 World Cup, where he was named 'Player of the Tournament'. However, following the World Cup, Suryakumar's form declined during the IPL, while Sanju rebounded with two centuries for Chennai, leading many fans to believe he could be the next captain.
Despite this, a report indicates that selectors and BCCI officials remain concerned about Sanju's inconsistency in T20 cricket. Axar Patel, who served as vice-captain under Suryakumar during the World Cup, is unlikely to be in contention due to his poor IPL performance as both a player and captain of Delhi Capitals.
The selectors are now focusing on Ishan Kishan, who initially captained Hyderabad, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer, who had a strong start to the IPL as Punjab's captain. While Sanju's World Cup performance gives him an edge, his long-standing inconsistency has not fully convinced the BCCI decision-makers. This IPL season, Sanju amassed 477 runs with an average of 43.36 and a strike rate of 165.63.
