Who is Suryansh Shedge? The Rising Star Stepping in for Injured Nitish Reddy!
Suryansh Shedge Joins India's T20I Squad
New Delhi: The talented Suryansh Shedge has been called up to replace the injured all-rounder Nitish Reddy in India's T20I squads for the upcoming series against Ireland and England, as announced by the BCCI on Tuesday.
India faced a setback when Reddy was ruled out of the white-ball tour of the UK due to a quadriceps injury sustained during the recent ODI series against Afghanistan.
The BCCI confirmed in a statement, "The men's selection committee has named Suryansh Shedge as a replacement for Nitish Kumar Reddy in India's squads for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England."
Reddy reported discomfort in his left quadriceps following the third ODI against Afghanistan on June 20. After a thorough medical evaluation, the BCCI's medical team recommended a rehabilitation period, sidelining him from both T20I series.
Shedge's selection comes after a series of impressive performances for India A in the recently concluded tri-series in Sri Lanka, where he scored 147 runs in five matches while also contributing with the ball, bowling 23 overs.
He was a key player for Mumbai in their successful Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign in 2024-25, amassing 131 runs at an impressive strike rate of 251.92 from the lower middle order.
Reddy was also expected to fill the gap left by Hardik Pandya, who is dealing with a quadriceps issue and is currently unable to bowl 10 overs in ODIs.
According to the medical bulletin, "Nitish Kumar Reddy has been ruled out of the Ireland series. The MRI has revealed swelling with fiber disruption in the left quadriceps. He has been advised to report to COE for further assessment."
It is anticipated that Reddy will require at least four weeks for recovery, although this timeline could be extended before he can begin his 'Return To Play' protocols.
The 23-year-old has played 10 Tests, 6 ODIs, and 4 T20Is for India thus far. He participated in two ODIs during the Afghanistan series but missed the second match in Lucknow.
While bowling coach Morne Morkel previously indicated that the injury did not appear serious, the situation has since escalated.
Many speculate that although Reddy's training with independent fast bowling coach Steffan Jones improved his speed from the late 120 km/h range to the mid-130 km/h range, his body may not have been able to adapt.
