Nitish Rana Faces Penalty in IPL 2026 Match
Mumbai: During the IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Delhi Capitals' batter Nitish Rana was penalized for violating the Code of Conduct.
Rana has been fined 25% of his match fee and received one demerit point for infringing Level 1 of the IPL's Code of Conduct for Players, according to an official statement from the IPL.
The statement noted that Rana acknowledged his wrongdoing and accepted the match referee's decision.
He was found in violation of article 2.3 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which pertains to the use of language deemed offensive, obscene, or profane, audible to spectators and viewers, whether through the stump microphone or otherwise.
Such behavior can include swearing out of frustration regarding one's performance or luck.
The incident unfolded during the 19th over when Rana engaged in a lengthy dispute with the fourth umpire over Tristan Stubbs' request for a glove change amid extreme heat. DC's head coach Hemang Badani was also seen conversing with the fourth umpire.
Shortly after, on the third ball of the 19th over, Stubbs was dismissed while attempting to hit Jamie Overton over mid-off, with Noor Ahmed taking the catch. He left the field, tossing his bat and gloves in frustration.
In terms of the match outcome, Sanju Samson's explosive century (115 runs off 56 balls) and Jamie Overton's impressive four-wicket haul propelled Chennai Super Kings to a 23-run victory over Delhi Capitals, marking their first win of IPL 2026.
Following Ruturaj's dismissal, Samson and Ayush Mhatre (59 runs) built a crucial partnership of 113 runs for the second wicket. Shivam Dube added valuable runs at the end, scoring 20 runs off just 10 balls, helping CSK set a formidable total of 212/2.
In response, Delhi Capitals started strong with openers KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka forming a 61-run partnership. However, CSK's bowlers made a remarkable comeback.
Pacer Jamie Overton was particularly impressive, achieving figures of 4-0-18-4, dismantling the Delhi Capitals' batting order as they were bowled out for 189.
