WFI Announces Selection Process for U-17 and U23 Wrestling Championships
Selection for U-17 Asian Wrestling Championship
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has made a significant decision regarding the upcoming U-17 National Wrestling Championship, scheduled to take place in Palwal, Haryana, from May 25 to 27. The gold medalists from this championship will automatically qualify to represent India at the U-17 Asian Wrestling Championship, which is set to occur in Vung Tau, Vietnam, from June 22 to 27.
An official from WFI explained that this decision was made due to the tight timeline between the two events and the impending registration deadline on UWW Athena, which closes on May 28. This procedure is essential for ensuring that entries and travel documents are processed efficiently.
Wrestlers who secure gold medals in Palwal must promptly submit their documentation to WFI officials right after the final matches. Coaches and state units have been instructed to facilitate this process smoothly.
U23 Asian Wrestling Championship Trials
In a separate development concerning the U23 Asian Wrestling Championship, the WFI has opted to conduct selection trials for freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women wrestlers. Eligibility for these trials includes all national campers under 23 years, participants from the March 25 trials, and medalists from the U20 national championships held in Kota, aged between 18 and 20.
The selection trials for the freestyle and Greco-Roman teams will take place in Lucknow on May 22, while the women's team trials are scheduled for May 23 in New Delhi.
An official emphasized that performances from previous years or the year 2024 will not be taken into account for these trials, as ample opportunities have already been provided to U23 wrestlers through various national events.
