West Indies Fined for Over-Rate Violation

New Delhi [India] June 1: The West Indies cricket team has faced a financial penalty for their slow over-rate during the first ODI against England, held on May 29 at Edgbaston, Birmingham, as reported by the ICC.

Match Referee Jeff Crowe from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel imposed a fine of five percent on each player's match fee after it was determined that Shai Hope's squad fell one over short of the required target, even after accounting for time allowances.

This sanction aligns with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate violations. According to ICC rules, players incur a five percent deduction from their match fee for every over their team fails to complete within the designated time.

Captain Shai Hope accepted the penalty without contesting it, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. The charge was brought forth by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Martin Saggers, along with third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd.

In the match, England secured a commanding 238-run victory, scoring 400/8, thanks to impressive half-centuries from Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Jacob Bethell. The West Indies, in reply, were bowled out for 162, with Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton each taking three wickets.

Although no English batsman reached a century, four players made significant contributions with half-centuries, highlighted by Jacob Bethell's 82, earning him the Player of the Match title.

The second ODI is set to take place in Cardiff, with the final match scheduled for Tuesday at The Oval.
