Injury Woes for Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar, the all-rounder from India, is facing potential injury issues as he is set to undergo a scan following a muscle strain during the first ODI against New Zealand on Sunday.

The 26-year-old bowler conceded 27 runs in five overs but had to leave the field midway through New Zealand's innings and did not return. Despite his discomfort, he later batted at number eight, contributing to India's four-wicket victory.

After the match, Indian captain Shubman Gill mentioned during the post-match presentation that Sundar is experiencing a side strain and will have a scan after the game. Sundar remained unbeaten with seven runs, forming a crucial partnership of 27 runs off 16 balls with Lokesh Rahul (who scored an unbeaten 29), helping India chase down the target of 306 runs in 49 overs.

Rahul noted that he was unaware of the severity of Sundar's injury during their partnership. He stated, 'I didn't realize he couldn't run. I knew he had some trouble in the first innings, but I wasn't aware of how serious it was.'

He added, 'He was hitting the ball really well. When he came in, we were already scoring at almost a run per ball, so there was no need to take risks. There was no added pressure on him. He rotated the strike and did his job well.'
