Visa Issues for Pakistani-Origin American Cricketers
Speculation arose following an Instagram story by American fast bowler Ali Khan, suggesting that India had denied visas to American cricketers of Pakistani descent. However, current information indicates that no formal visa rejections have occurred, and the situation is still under investigation and review.
Notably, Ali Khan, along with Shayan Jahangir, Mohammad Mohsin, and Ehsan Adil, are all players of Pakistani origin currently participating in a training camp with the American team in Sri Lanka. Each player completed the visa application appointment process at the Indian High Commission in Colombo on January 13. According to sources, they submitted all required documents as outlined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in a timely manner.
Reports suggest that during their appointment, the players were informed that the visa process could not be completed at that stage. Subsequently, the American team management received communication from the Indian embassy indicating that some necessary information had been received, while other inputs were still pending from the Ministry of External Affairs. Players will be contacted for further action once this process is finalized.
Officials clarified that this should not be interpreted as a visa rejection. In fact, it is standard for players of Pakistani origin, regardless of their nationality or team, to undergo additional scrutiny. Previously, international players like Moeen Ali, Shoaib Bashir, and Usman Khawaja have faced similar procedures during their visits to India.
The situation gained further attention when Ali Khan posted a message on social media stating 'India Visa Denied,' which fueled speculation. However, those involved in the matter assert that the applications remain active and require approvals from multiple departments before final clearance.
It is important to note that these regulations also apply to other teams. Players of Pakistani descent are part of teams from the UAE, Canada, Oman, and Italy, and they too must navigate this process.
Ali Khan has played 15 One Day Internationals and 18 T20 internationals for the USA and was part of the historic victory against Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup. While the final roster for 2026 is yet to be announced, he remains in contention for selection.
It is noteworthy that the ICC Men's T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place from February 7 to May 8 in India and Sri Lanka. The USA has been placed in Group A alongside India, Pakistan, Namibia, and the Netherlands. Currently, officials state that the visa process is ongoing, and patience is required before reaching any conclusions.
