Virgil van Dijk Extends Liverpool Tenure with New Contract
Virgil van Dijk Commits to Liverpool with New Deal
Liverpool [UK], April 17: The captain of Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk, has officially signed a new contract, ensuring his leadership role continues for the upcoming seasons. This extension comes nearly seven and a half years after he first joined the club, as reported on the official Liverpool FC website.
This news follows closely on the heels of Mohamed Salah's recent contract renewal with the Reds.
Expressing his feelings, Van Dijk shared, “I’m very happy, very proud,” on Liverpoolfc.com.
He added, “There are so many emotions that go through my head right now speaking about it.”
“It’s a proud feeling, a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy,” he remarked.
“It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool,” he stated.
“There wasn’t any doubt in my mind that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me an adopted Scouser the other day – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling,” he noted.
Van Dijk made his move to Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 and quickly became recognized as one of the top defenders globally. His strong presence on the field has been crucial to the team's achievements, contributing to seven major trophies during his tenure.
To date, the Dutch defender has played 314 matches and netted 27 goals. His accolades include the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and two League Cups.
Individually, Van Dijk was honored as the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2019 and has been selected for the Premier League Team of the Year four times. That same year, he was the runner-up for the Ballon d’Or, narrowly losing to Lionel Messi.
Having been appointed club captain in the summer of 2023, the 33-year-old is now set to further enhance his legacy as he leads Liverpool in their quest for more silverware.
