Indian cricket star Virat Kohli recently shared insights on managing his workload and maintaining performance levels after leading the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a six-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2026 season opener. Kohli delivered an impressive unbeaten innings of 69 runs off 38 balls, featuring five fours and six sixes, which enabled RCB to chase down a record 202 runs in just 15.4 overs.
In the post-match presentation, Kohli emphasized that burnout has become a more significant concern than inadequate preparation due to his extensive playing schedule over the years. He noted that taking breaks is crucial for his mental freshness and motivation, allowing him to return to the game with full energy and focus.

"I appreciate the kind words. It's great to be back on the field. The last T20 match I played was the final last year, but my recent performances in the one-day series helped me maintain my momentum. I focused on playing my natural game, and as long as I keep my rhythm and stay fit, everything falls into place," Kohli remarked during the post-match discussion.
"Given the intense scheduling over the past 15 years, I often face the risk of burnout rather than being underprepared. These breaks are essential for my mental health. I return to the game feeling fresh and excited, ready to give 120%. The combination of physical fitness and mental readiness is key to my performance," he added.

Kohli also highlighted the importance of consistently contributing to the team's success and praised his teammate Devdutt Padikkal for his outstanding performance. "It's vital to keep performing and not take your place for granted. Padikkal's innings was remarkable. I had planned to be aggressive during the powerplay, but I noticed his form and decided to keep him on strike while picking up boundaries. He dominated the game, and I encouraged him to continue his excellent play. His performance was a testament to his skill and confidence, especially after a successful domestic season," Kohli stated.
Kohli Sets New Records
With his remarkable innings against SRH, Kohli made history by becoming the first player in IPL to surpass 4000 runs in successful chases. Additionally, he overtook former Pakistan player Shoaib Malik to become the sixth-highest run-scorer in T20 cricket, with Malik having accumulated 13,571 runs in 557 matches and 515 innings, averaging 35.99 with 83 half-centuries.
