Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli recently shared his thoughts on being regarded as one of the sport's all-time greats. He emphasized that he does not view himself as the best, acknowledging that numerous players have made significant contributions to cricket throughout its history. Kohli's remarks came during an interview with JioStar, just before the first ODI against the West Indies set to commence on Sunday.
A Record-Breaking Career
With an impressive tally of 54 ODI centuries and over 28,000 runs in international cricket, Kohli is on the verge of reaching 15,000 ODI runs. His achievements include winning every major ICC trophy, making a strong case for his status as the 'Greatest of All Time' among his fans. Throughout his career, he has consistently set new standards in batting across all formats, and even as he approaches the latter stages of his career, he continues to break records.
Kohli on His Motivation and Legacy
Discussing his legacy, Kohli stated, "I do not consider myself the best ever. Different players have existed in different times of the sport, and they have done some amazing things, but might not have accumulated those kinds of numbers, and some have numbers which are way better than mine. But I guess, apart from this, everyone's main goal eventually is to create enough impact."
He expressed gratitude for his nearly 19-year career and shared his ongoing motivation to perform. "I have been fortunate enough to have played for so long, and of course, when you are motivated to do well over that period, you end up performing more often than not. But eventually, the end goal has always been to contribute towards the betterment of the team and take the team towards the result that we want. As long as that answer is yes, and you mix up experience, your fitness, game awareness and motivation all together. So, I am blessed that it is still there, and I continue to be excited to play for the country, which is a great honour," he concluded.
Records Within Reach
Kohli, who is India's second-highest ODI run-scorer after Sachin Tendulkar, is just 59 runs shy of reaching the milestone of 15,000 ODI runs. He has amassed 14,941 runs in 314 matches and 302 innings, boasting an average of 58.59, along with 54 centuries and 79 fifties, with a highest score of 183. He could potentially become the fastest player to achieve this feat during the upcoming series.
As he aims for the coveted 100-century mark, Kohli currently has 85 centuries. Notably, he has scored nine centuries in just 41 innings against the West Indies, making it plausible for him to add to his tally in the upcoming matches.
Thiruvananthapuram: A Fortunate Venue
Thiruvananthapuram has proven to be a lucky ground for Kohli, where he remains unbeaten in two ODIs, scoring a total of 199 runs. His standout performance includes an impressive 166* off 110 balls against Sri Lanka in January 2023, showcasing his ability to accelerate and build innings effectively.
Chasing Tendulkar's Records
Kohli is also on the brink of breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record of 60 List-A centuries, currently holding 59. Achieving this would significantly enhance his legacy in the 50-over format, where he has excelled from state to international levels.
He is just two centuries away from surpassing Tendulkar's record of 42 international centuries at home, currently sitting at 41. Additionally, Kohli is close to breaking the record for the most ODI runs in home conditions, with Tendulkar's 6,976 runs in 164 matches as the benchmark. Kohli has scored 6,867 runs in 130 matches at an average of 62.42, including 27 centuries and 36 fifties.
In six innings this year, Kohli has accumulated 384 runs at an average of 64.00, with a strike rate exceeding 106, including one century and three fifties.
