Kohli's Injury Ahead of Afghanistan ODI Series

As Team India gears up for the ODI series against Afghanistan, they face a significant setback with the news that former captain Virat Kohli may not be able to play due to a hamstring injury.

Kohli recently showcased his skills in the IPL 2026 final, scoring an impressive 75 runs off 42 balls, leading the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their first IPL title by defeating the Gujarat Titans. His consistent performance throughout the season was crucial in securing the championship.

Returning to T20 cricket after a year, Kohli demonstrated his experience and adaptability, fitting seamlessly into the tournament's competitive atmosphere.

Kohli's Absence from the ODI Series

India is set to face Afghanistan in a three-match ODI series from June 13 to 20. However, Kohli's potential absence due to a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL final poses a major challenge for the team.

Initially included in the ODI squad announced on May 19, Kohli's unavailability now raises concerns for the team's preparation ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.

A source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed Kohli's exclusion from the series due to his injury.

Potential Replacements for Kohli

The BCCI has not yet made an official announcement regarding Kohli's replacement in the ODI squad. However, selectors are actively considering options to fill the gap left by his absence.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who impressed with a century in the South Africa ODI series last December, is a strong candidate to step in. His aggressive batting style would align well with the team's needs as they transition towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who recently joined the India A squad for the ODI tri-series against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, could also be a viable option, especially given his traditional batting technique and previous ODI century against South Africa.

Another contender is Devdutt Padikkal, whose outstanding performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored 725 runs at an average of 90.62, positions him as a top-order stabilizer. He is already part of the squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan.

Sai Sudharsan may also be considered for the role, known for his technical proficiency and ability to anchor the innings.
