Virat Kohli Discusses Loyalty to RCB and His Captaincy Decision

Virat Kohli's Commitment to RCB

Virat Kohli, the star batter for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), recently shared insights about his unwavering loyalty to the franchise and the reasons behind his decision to step down from captaincy in 2021.

In a recent episode of the RCB Podcast, available on the franchise's YouTube channel, Kohli reflected on his journey with RCB, which began with his international debut in 2008. Despite not securing a championship title, he has become the franchise's leading run-scorer, amassing 8,933 runs across 278 matches and 269 innings, maintaining an average of 39.52, including eight centuries and 64 fifties.

Kohli's Loyalty to the Franchise

Discussing his long-term commitment, Kohli mentioned that during his peak years from 2016 to 2019, he had opportunities to join other IPL teams. However, he chose to remain with RCB due to the strong bond and mutual respect he developed with the franchise and its fans.

"I had chances to explore other options, especially during the prime years of my career. There were constant suggestions to switch teams, but I valued the relationship I built with RCB and the love from the fans above all else," he stated.

Kohli expressed that while he contemplated a change, he ultimately prioritized staying with a team where he earned respect over the years. He emphasized that the affection he receives from fans is far more significant than any trophy, stating, "The love from the fans is something that will stay with me for life."

Reflections on Quitting Captaincy

Kohli also opened up about the challenges he faced while captaining both RCB and the Indian national team. The constant scrutiny and expectations placed on him as a player and leader became overwhelming.

"I was in a constant state of pressure, exposed to it 24/7. It became increasingly difficult, which led to my decision to step down. I realized I needed to find happiness and a space where I could play cricket without the weight of judgment or expectations," he explained.

Currently, in the ongoing IPL season, Kohli leads the run-scoring charts with 505 runs in 11 matches, averaging 63.12, including seven half-centuries and a top score of 73*. RCB is performing well, sitting at the top of the table with eight victories and three losses, and they are set to face the Lucknow Super Giants on May 9.
