Former Indian cricket captain and renowned batsman Virat Kohli has reportedly chosen not to take part in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, set to commence on December 24. Kohli made a notable return to the national team during the ongoing ODI series against South Africa, where he scored an impressive 135 runs off 120 balls, contributing to India's 17-run victory in the series opener held at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on November 30.
Having stepped back from T20 internationals and Test matches, Kohli is now concentrating solely on ODIs, with aspirations to prolong his illustrious career until the 2027 World Cup, which is anticipated to be his final tournament. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had hoped to see both Kohli and Rohit Sharma participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to align with their long-term ODI strategies leading up to the significant event in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Kohli's Refusal Amidst Coaching Tensions
In light of the escalating tensions with head coach Gautam Gambhir, Kohli has reportedly expressed his reluctance to participate in India's premier 50-over domestic tournament, despite the BCCI's request for senior players to engage as part of their long-term ODI strategy.
Following a disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, the BCCI mandated that all contracted players participate in domestic cricket to be considered for national selection. This directive was taken seriously by players like Rohit Sharma and Kohli, who both played in the Ranji Trophy earlier this year.
A source from the BCCI indicated that while Rohit Sharma is likely to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Kohli's refusal to join the tournament means the board is not inclined to make exceptions for individual players. The source stated, "The issue is with the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He (Kohli) simply doesn't want to play. When Rohit is also playing, how can there be an exception for one player?"

Kohli's last appearance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy dates back to February 2010 in Gurgoan. Since then, he has prioritized international commitments and managed his workload over participating in domestic 50-over matches. His return to the Ranji Trophy was significant, marking his first first-class domestic match in over a decade.

Kohli's decision to skip the Vijay Hazare Trophy has led to speculation regarding his strained relationship with head coach Gautam Gambhir and potential friction with chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The reasons behind his refusal to participate in this domestic tournament remain unclear.
After being awarded Player of the Match for his 135-run performance against South Africa, Kohli emphasized the importance of mental preparation over extensive training, stating, "I've never been a believer in a lot of prep. All my cricket has been mental. I work physically very hard, as long as my fitness levels are up, and then you visualize batting and feeling well, it's good."
Efforts are reportedly underway to mediate the growing tensions between Kohli and Gambhir ahead of the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur, with BCCI selector Pragyan Ojha expected to facilitate discussions.
