Vietnam's Bold Move in Pickleball Rankings

Vietnam, recognized as a prominent hub for pickleball, has taken significant steps to refine its player ranking system. The country's leading tournament technology provider, Sport Connect JSC, has teamed up with the Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR), a globally recognized player rating system. This collaboration aims to incorporate DUPR ratings into Sport Connect's tournament platform, enabling Vietnamese players to earn internationally acknowledged ratings from local competitions. This initiative comes as Vietnam emerges as one of the fastest-growing pickleball markets in Asia, boasting a high number of DUPR users.

The partnership is set to facilitate a streamlined process for Vietnamese athletes to gauge their skills against global competitors using the same rating system embraced by USA Pickleball, the Global Pickleball Federation, and Major League Pickleball (MLP), among others. Sport Connect, which specializes in tournament management, will now integrate DUPR's rating system into its operations. Consequently, every match played in Sport Connect-managed events will contribute to players' official DUPR ratings.

One of the primary benefits for players is the portability of their ratings. A DUPR rating obtained in Hanoi will carry the same weight as one earned in cities like Manila, Kuala Lumpur, New Delhi, or Los Angeles, allowing athletes to participate in international tournaments without needing new assessments or local rankings.

Advancing the Pickleball Ecosystem

This development aligns with the rapid growth of pickleball in Southeast Asia, where international events like the PPA Tour Asia are providing more opportunities for cross-border competition. A unified rating system ensures that players are seeded based on verified performance rather than regional standings. DUPR's International Director, Johnnie Carmichael, who has previously competed in Hanoi, praised the emerging talent in Vietnam. He noted, "Vietnam's pickleball players exhibit remarkable skill and a competitive spirit that rivals any market in the region."

Carmichael also commended Sport Connect for establishing the necessary infrastructure to support the sport's expansion. He stated, "Sport Connect has developed the professional tournament framework that this market deserves." For DUPR, this agreement broadens its reach in Asia, where the rating platform already supports various clubs, leagues, and tournaments. For Vietnam, this marks a significant step in linking its domestic pickleball scene with the global competitive arena, offering players internationally recognized ratings as the country's presence in the sport continues to rise.
