Vietnam Emerges as a Thriving Hub for Pickleball Enthusiasts
Vietnam's Pickleball Boom
Christian Alshon recently shared his surprise at the rapid growth of pickleball in Vietnam, noting the sport's widespread acceptance during his attendance at the MB Hanoi Cup. This event marked the beginning of the PPA Tour Asia season and showcased high-level competition, attracting players from around the globe.
After the tournament, Alshon explored the city and observed the sport's popularity at the grassroots level. Pickleball courts have emerged in various unconventional spots, including pedestrian pathways, bus stops, and public parks, highlighting the sport's remarkable expansion.
This grassroots enthusiasm has also led to success in professional competitions. Hoang Nam Ly from Vietnam secured the men's singles title at the MB Hanoi Cup, defeating compatriot Heing Truong in the final. Alshon, who was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Nam Ly, expressed his astonishment at the pickleball infrastructure he encountered in Vietnam.
On Instagram, he shared his experiences of discovering how pickleball has seamlessly integrated into daily life in Vietnam. In one of his videos filmed at the historic Thang Long Citadel, he was amazed to find a pickleball court situated within this heritage site. He remarked, “I’m at a historical site right now. I’m at the center of the Thang Long Citadel. It was used between the 11th and 18th century. There’s like this big flag tower right here. And guess what we got? Pickleball court. We’ve got a pickleball court in the center of a historical center in Hanoi, Vietnam. That’s crazy. Who would have thought? How did that get there? I’d love to see it.”
Although Alshon did not secure a title at the tournament, his insights into Vietnam's pickleball culture highlight a broader trend: the country's impressive emergence as a pickleball destination, where the sport is flourishing both professionally and as a vital part of urban life.
