Venus Williams Returns to the US Open

New York [US], July 29: Venus Williams is gearing up to participate in the upcoming US Open, set to commence next month. She will team up with Reilly Opelka in the mixed doubles category, having secured a wild-card entry.


At 45 years old, Williams made her return to the tennis circuit last week after a 16-month hiatus. The seven-time Grand Slam winner and Opelka were among the 14 pairs revealed by the US Tennis Association for the mixed doubles competition.


In total, 16 teams will vie for the championship title, with eight pairs receiving direct entries and six teams awarded wild cards for the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship. The final two wild cards will be disclosed later. The teams granted direct entry are those with the highest combined current singles rankings.


Last week, the four-time Olympic medalist, who had not participated in a tournament since the Miami Open in March 2024, achieved victories in both singles and doubles matches at the DC Open.


The eight teams that received direct entry include Emma Navarro (No. 11) paired with Jannik Sinner (No. 1); Paula Badosa (No. 10) with Jack Draper (No. 5); Iga Swiatek (No. 3) alongside Casper Ruud (No. 13); Elena Rybakina (No. 12) and Taylor Fritz (No. 4); Amanda Anisimova (No. 7) with Holger Rune (No. 9); Belinda Bencic (No. 20) and Alexander Zverev (No. 3); Jessica Pegula (No. 4) with Tommy Paul (No. 15); and Mirra Andreeva (No. 5) paired with Daniil Medvedev (No. 14).


In addition to Williams and Opelka, other wild-card entries include Emma Raducanu (No. 33) and Carlos Alcaraz (No. 2); Madison Keys (No. 8) with Frances Tiafoe (No. 12); Olga Danilovic (No. 40) and Novak Djokovic (No. 6); Taylor Townsend (No. 75) with Ben Shelton (No. 7); and Sara Errani teaming up with Andrea Vavassori, the mixed doubles champions from the US Open 2024.
