Veer Shah Dominates at India's First Junior Pickleball Championship
Veer Shah's Stellar Performance
With an impressive collection of five gold medals, Veer Shah from Gujarat showcased his exceptional talent at India's inaugural Junior Pickleball Championship, which took place at the Dinkers Pickleball Academy in Ahmedabad from June 12-14. As the current national champion in both U14 Boys Singles and Doubles, Veer solidified his status as one of the most promising young athletes in the sport. He achieved a remarkable clean sweep of all three U14 titles and also secured victories in the U16 Boys Singles and Doubles, along with a bronze in the U16 Mixed Doubles.
Following his outstanding performance, Veer expressed confidence in his chances of being selected for India's Pickleball World Cup team, with announcements expected next week. This Junior Championship also served as a selection trial for the World Cup, scheduled to be held in Da Nang, Vietnam, from August 30 to September 6.
Confidence and Experience Fueling Ambitions
Veer shared his optimism with Pickleball Now, stating, "I am confident that I will be selected for Team India." His self-assurance is backed by both his recent form and past experiences. At the last Pickleball World Cup in Florida, he earned a silver medal in the U14 Boys Singles and bronze medals in both the U16 team event and U14 Mixed Doubles. Now, he aims for an even greater achievement, saying, "If I am selected for Vietnam, I want to just win a gold medal for Team India."
In a strategic move, the Indian Pickleball Association (IPA) has decided to evaluate players based on their performances throughout the year, rather than solely relying on results from the selection trials.
Tenacity and Determination on Display
The Junior Championship highlighted Veer's unwavering determination to become India's top player in the sub-junior category. He entered the competition after facing rare defeats in three finals at the Sportify Dink Masters in May. However, he rose to the occasion when it mattered most. The U14 Boys Singles category featured some of the best young talents in India, but Veer remained undeterred. He began his campaign with a decisive 15-3 win over Dev Shah, followed by a 15-2 victory against Vidhun Vikram. In the quarterfinals, Atharv Mittal succumbed to Veer's aggressive play, losing 3-21. Veer continued his dominance with a 21-6 win over Jaden Mathew in the semifinals and clinched the title with a 21-5 victory against Viransh Shah in the final.
In the Boys Doubles final, Veer teamed up with Aarin Ballani, overcoming a shaky start to defeat Kaveer Mehta and Trilok Sundaresan with scores of 9-15, 15-7, 15-7.
Aiming for Greater Heights
For the Mixed Doubles title, Veer faced Viransh once more, this time partnering with Mahika Rathod. They triumphed over Viransh and Maanasi Karthik with scores of 15-13, 15-9, completing a clean sweep in the U14 category. Reflecting on his comeback, Veer noted, "At Dink Master, I was under pressure and I didn't play my game." The challenges he faced at the Dink Masters motivated him to intensify his training at the Dinkers Pickleball Academy under the guidance of India's chief national coach, Dhiren Patel. "I practiced extensively to win all the events I participated in," he stated. "I always strive to give my best and work on my weaker shots. This is my only strategy," he added.
Despite his achievements, Veer remains hungry for more. While the IPA will ultimately decide the final squad for the World Cup, his consistent performances have bolstered his chances for selection. Veer believes that his previous experience in Vietnam will be advantageous, as he competed in the World Pickleball Championship there in 2023, winning gold in the U14 Boys Singles and bronze in the U18 Boys Doubles.
When asked about his aspirations, Veer expressed, "I want to play in the Olympics and represent Team India, bringing home more medals for my country."
Dreaming Big in Professional Pickleball
On the professional front, Veer aims to secure a PPA Tour contract and fulfill his dream of playing alongside one of pickleball's legends, Ben Johns. "Since I started playing pickleball, I have looked up to him. I hope to play with him one day because I admire his skills," Veer shared. While Johns is his idol, Veer also follows PPA Tour stars Federico Staksrud and Gabriel Tardio, learning valuable lessons from each. He remarked, "From Ben Johns, I learned the importance of consistency. From Fredrik Staksrud, I learned that we can excel in a short time. From Gabriel Tardio, I learned that skills are crucial in any sport." With his rising profile in the domestic scene, Veer is optimistic about advancing his career by securing a spot in the upcoming Indian Pickleball League. "I am quite confident that my performance will lead to my selection in the IPBL," Veer concluded.
