Giza, May 9: In an impressive display, Indian squash player Veer Chotrani, currently ranked 45th in the world, secured a victory against his higher-ranked compatriot Abhay Singh during the opening round of the World Squash Championships held at the Palm Hills Club and PGC Golf Central Mall.
Chotrani triumphed with scores of 14-12, 8-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-2, marking his second win in three encounters against Singh, who is ranked 22nd globally.
After a narrow win in the first game against Asian Games medallist Singh, Chotrani faced challenges, dropping the next two games. However, he rallied back to win the final two games, securing his place in the second round.
Reflecting on the match, Chotrani stated, "Competing against a fellow countryman in the first round is always challenging. It's unfortunate that one of us had to exit early, but I'm thrilled to have advanced." He further expressed that this victory serves as a significant confidence boost following his recent training efforts. "I was disappointed with my previous loss to Abhay in India, so this win feels very rewarding," he added.
Next, Chotrani is set to face the world number one from Egypt, Mostafa Asal, on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Ramit Tandon and Velavan Senthilkumar are preparing to begin their campaigns in the 64-player tournament, facing Egyptian world number 21 Kareem El Torkey and French world number 5 Victor Crouin, respectively.
Last year, India's journey in the World Championships concluded in the second round, with Anahat Singh, Veer Chotrani, Abhay Singh, and Ramit Tandon all facing tough losses, while Velavan Senthilkumar was eliminated in the first round.
To date, India has not secured any medals in singles events at the World Squash Championships.
