During the 'Follow the Blues' program, Varun shared insights on the importance of maintaining pressure on oneself while preparing for such a significant tournament. He stated that players must challenge themselves even when there are no apparent obstacles. If a match seems easy, it’s crucial to mentally create pressure and push oneself to perform better. Understanding the opposition and bowling with confidence at the right length are key factors he aims to carry into the World Cup.
Varun also credited his recent success in international cricket to sticking to the basics and consistently bowling at the right length. He noted that this approach has proven effective in his last three matches, and he intends to continue this strategy. He highlighted that confidence plays a vital role in performance; when one lacks confidence, it can negatively impact their skills. Maintaining self-assurance and trusting one's abilities is essential for consistent performance.
This year, Varun has been unbeaten in T20 internationals for India, taking 32 wickets at an impressive average of 13.18 across 19 matches, with his best figures being 5/24 and an economy rate of 6.69. As the number one bowler in the ICC Men's T20 International rankings, he is one of India's key players in the tournament, having claimed 51 wickets in 32 matches at an average of 15.00 and an economy rate of 6.74, including two five-wicket hauls.
