Early Beginnings and Promising Achievements

Vaishnavi Adkar began her tennis journey in Pune at just seven years old. She quickly established herself as a formidable player, achieving the top rank in India for the U-14 category and reaching an impressive ITF junior ranking of 115. Over the past year, she has successfully transitioned to the professional circuit, notably reaching the finals of the ITF W100 event in Bengaluru, marking the best singles performance by an Indian woman in nearly two decades.

Recent Successes

Prior to her performance in Bengaluru, Vaishnavi earned a medal for India at the World University Games and clinched the National Championships title. She further solidified her status by winning both singles and doubles titles at the ITF W35 Kalaburagi Open, showcasing her growing prowess on the international stage.

Rapid Ascent to the Top

Her consistent performances have led to a remarkable rise in her rankings, moving from outside the top 600 to breaking into the Top 400. As of April 2026, she proudly holds the title of India's No. 1 women's singles player. This week, she also made her debut at the Billie Jean King Cup in Delhi.

Support System's Impact

Currently training at the Rohan Bopanna Tennis Academy in Bengaluru, Vaishnavi's growth has been bolstered by a well-structured, high-performance environment, which has enhanced her consistency and confidence on the tour. Balachandran Manikath, the Director of Tennis at RBTA, emphasized that her progress is a testament to the importance of a solid support system. He stated, "Vaishnavi's rise is a result of disciplined work and strong backing. The travel team model has improved planning, training, and recovery, demonstrating what Indian players can achieve with the right structure."

Reflections on Her Journey

Vaishnavi expressed her gratitude, saying, "Becoming India No. 1 and breaking into the Top 400 is very special for me, but it's also a reflection of the team around me. Having a structured programme and travelling with a dedicated coach and physio has made a huge difference to my consistency and confidence on tour. I'm grateful to everyone for believing in me and supporting my journey."

With her current momentum and a clear path forward, Vaishnavi is positioning herself as one of India's most promising talents on the international tennis scene.
