Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Daring IPL Debut: A Young Star's Journey

The Rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Sanju Samson, the former captain of Rajasthan Royals, shared insights about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's remarkable first-ball six during his IPL debut against Lucknow Super Giants. Sooryavanshi emerged as a standout player in the last IPL season, showcasing his fearless batting style.

At just 14 years old, he made a memorable entrance into the IPL by hitting a six on his very first ball, ultimately scoring 34 runs off 20 deliveries, which included 2 fours and 3 sixes, achieving a strike rate of 170 in a close match where the Royals lost by two runs. His bold batting and self-assuredness captured the attention of fans, commentators, and experienced players, establishing him as one of the most promising talents in Indian cricket.

Record-Breaking Performance

Sooryavanshi's exceptional skills were further highlighted in a match against the Gujarat Titans, where he scored an impressive 101 runs off just 38 balls. This performance not only made him the youngest T20 centurion but also the second-fastest player to achieve an IPL century, with his 35-ball century marking a historic moment in IPL history.

Samson Shares Sooryavanshi's Bold Strategy

During the BCCI Naman Awards, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi shared the spotlight with Hardik Pandya and Sanju Samson. At the event, Samson recounted a humorous yet insightful exchange between Sooryavanshi and Rahul Dravid prior to his IPL debut at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

Samson revealed that Dravid had asked Sooryavanshi about his game plan, considering his youth and inexperience. With characteristic confidence, Sooryavanshi responded that he intended to hit a six on the first ball.

Samson narrated, "Rahul Sir called him into the room and said, 'Sanju, we need to talk to him. He’s a very young kid; we have to explain how to go about it.' When Dravid asked, 'Vaibhav, what’s the plan?' Sooryavanshi replied, 'Nothing special, Sir. I’ll just play.' When pressed further, he stated, 'If the first ball is in my zone, I’ll hit it in the air.' And that’s precisely what he did. He plays like he’s in a video game!"

Sooryavanshi's Impact on Rajasthan Royals

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi concluded his inaugural IPL season with a total of 252 runs, which included a century and a fifty, boasting an average of 36 and an impressive strike rate of 206.55 across seven matches. He was the only player to achieve a strike rate of over 200 with a minimum of 200 runs in the last IPL season.

Acquired by the Rajasthan Royals for INR 1.1 Crore during the IPL 2025 Auction, Sooryavanshi became one of the youngest and most expensive teenage talents in IPL history. The franchise recognized his potential early on, having scouted him extensively due to his outstanding performances in domestic and Under-19 cricket.

Reflecting on his journey, Sooryavanshi expressed gratitude towards the Royals for transforming his life by supporting him after identifying his talent. He stated, "When I made my domestic debut, RR had been monitoring my progress during my domestic and Under-19 games. Their scouting team had been observing me for a long time. I felt confident about joining RR after a successful trial with them."

Looking Ahead

As a rising star in Indian cricket, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is anticipated to play a crucial role for the Rajasthan Royals in the upcoming IPL season.
