Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: India's Young Cricket Prodigy Set for International Debut
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Historic Selection
Rajkumar Sharma, the childhood coach of Virat Kohli, has praised the remarkable talent of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is poised to make his international debut as India faces Ireland in the first T20I of their two-match series in Belfast this Friday.
Sooryavanshi's inclusion in the T20I squads for the tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games, marks a significant milestone. He has become the youngest player ever selected for the Indian national team, surpassing a 36-year-old record previously held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted at 16 against Pakistan in 1989. Should Sooryavanshi play, he will set a new record as the youngest Indian to participate in international cricket at just 15.
'A Magnificent Achievement'
In an interview, Rajkumar Sharma described Sooryavanshi's selection as a 'magnificent achievement,' commending his extraordinary skills and fearless approach against elite bowlers. He expressed his excitement for the young player's potential debut and wished him great success.
"This is a magnificent achievement for Vaibhav. His exceptional talent is evident in how he has faced the world's best bowlers. He truly deserves this opportunity, and I am eagerly looking forward to his debut. I wish him all the best," Sharma stated.
Outstanding Domestic Performance
Sooryavanshi earned his first national call-up after an impressive IPL 2026 season with the Rajasthan Royals, where he scored 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30, including one century and five fifties. He finished as the tournament's top run-scorer, hitting a record 72 sixes and receiving multiple accolades, including the Orange Cap and Most Valuable Player.
In a recent tri-nation series in Sri Lanka, featuring teams like SL A and Afghanistan A, he scored 211 runs in five innings at an average of 42.20, with a strike rate nearing 201. His best score was 94, and he achieved the fastest List A fifty in just 11 balls against Sri Lanka A.
'Once in a Generation' Talent
Rajkumar noted that Sooryavanshi's success has inspired many parents to enroll their children in cricket coaching at a young age, hoping they can replicate his achievements. However, he emphasized that talents like Sooryavanshi are exceptionally rare, emerging only once in a generation.
"Yes, many young kids are now coming forward, and their parents want them to start early. For instance, someone brought a 5-year-old to me, and I advised them to wait until he is 8 before enrolling him in coaching. They asked how he could become like Vaibhav if they waited. Expectations have certainly risen due to his success, but such players are born only once in a generation," he explained.
Virat Kohli's Fitness Update
Currently focusing on ODIs, Virat Kohli missed India's recent ODI series against Afghanistan due to a right hamstring injury sustained during the IPL 2026 final. However, he has been included in the squad for the upcoming series against England, following the T20I matches in Ireland.
Rajkumar expressed optimism about Kohli's recovery, stating, "He has been at the Centre of Excellence, and I am hopeful he will be fit for the series. Given his intensity in matches, I believe he will return with even greater passion. He always gives his all on the field, and I expect nothing less this time."
