Uzbekistani Grandmaster Nodirbek Yakubboev has once again captured attention with his courteous response of 'Namaste' to Indian Grandmaster Harika Dronavali's handshake offer during the Grenke Freestyle Open. This moment quickly gained traction online, prompting Indian player Sasikiran Krishnan to reciprocate with a similar gesture after round 7, to which Yakubboev responded with another 'Namaste'.

This isn't the first instance where Yakubboev has opted out of a handshake. A similar situation arose last year during the Wijk aan Zee Challengers, where he faced R Vaishali, which also sparked considerable online discussion. Following that incident, Yakubboev expressed his regret, stating, 'I apologize for what happened. It was an awkward moment for both of us. I was in a rush that day, and it seems there was a misunderstanding. I wish both of you good luck in your future games. I have great respect for you and your brother, as well as all Indian chess players.'

Vaishali responded graciously, saying, 'It's completely understandable. I didn't perceive it negatively, so there's no need for concern. Your apology is appreciated, and it's all good.' Yakubboev later clarified that his actions were influenced by 'religious reasons', explaining, 'I want to clarify the situation... I do not touch other women due to my religious beliefs.'
