Usman Khawaja to Retire Post-Ashes Test

Usman Khawaja has revealed his decision to retire from international cricket following the fifth and final Ashes Test against England in Sydney. Throughout his career, he has participated in 87 Test matches for Australia, accumulating 6,206 runs at an average of 43.39, which includes 16 centuries and 28 half-centuries. Khawaja confirmed his retirement during a press conference today, with the Sydney Test set to commence on Sunday, January 4.

Speaking to reporters in the SCG press room, Khawaja mentioned that he had been contemplating this decision for some time, even before the series began. He sensed that this would be his last series. He also noted that head coach Andrew McDonald expressed a desire for him to participate in the 2027 tour of India.

However, the left-handed batsman indicated that not being selected for the Adelaide Test initially served as a sign that it might be time to step away from the game. He was given the opportunity to play in Adelaide due to Steve Smith falling ill at the last moment. Khawaja shared that he had discussed this with his wife, Rachel, and recognized it as a significant opportunity, although he had not completely given up hope of continuing his career.

Khawaja expressed satisfaction in retiring on his own terms and with dignity at his favorite venue, the SCG. He acknowledged that the start of the series was challenging, and not being selected for the Adelaide Test was perhaps a clear indication that it was time to move on. He also revealed that he had contemplated retirement multiple times throughout his career, including during last summer's series against India, where he had even mentioned his retirement to the head coach after the Boxing Day Test.

He stated, "I told him, if at any point you want me to retire, I will do so immediately. I have no objections. I am not just thinking about myself." Khawaja further mentioned that he felt targeted by some who accused him of being selfish for not retiring sooner. However, he clarified that he was not solely considering his own interests, as McDonald had clearly stated that he wanted Khawaja to remain for the Sri Lanka series and the World Test Championship.

Khawaja confirmed that after retiring from international cricket, he will continue to play for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League (BBL).
