USA's Strong Start in FIFA World Cup 2026

The United States kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey with an impressive 4-1 win against Paraguay on Friday (local time), highlighted by exceptional performances from Folarin Balogun and Christian Pulisic.

Balogun netted two goals, while Pulisic was instrumental, consistently challenging the Paraguayan defense and contributing significantly to various attacking plays as the hosts maintained control from the outset.

The scoring began early for the USA in the 7th minute when Pulisic delivered a brilliant pass that split the defense, leading to an own goal by Damian Bobadilla after Weston McKennie’s involvement. Balogun then extended the lead in the 31st minute, finishing off a precise cross from Pulisic.

Balogun secured his second goal deep into stoppage time (90+8′), skillfully maneuvering past two defenders to finalize a comfortable victory for the hosts, who dominated the match throughout.

Paraguay managed to score once in the 73rd minute through Mauricio Magalhães, but they could not sustain any momentum against a commanding US team.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino decided to substitute Pulisic at halftime, bringing in Sebastian Berhalter, as the USA looked to manage their squad for the long tournament ahead.

In the closing moments, Gio Reyna added to the score with a spectacular long-range shot that found the top corner, concluding a resounding opening win for the hosts.

In another match within the group, Canada started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Cyle Larin scoring a late equalizer in the 78th minute.

The United States will next face their upcoming group opponent in Seattle, while Canada is set to play against Qatar in their next match in Vancouver.
