UPT20 League: A Catalyst for Young Cricketers and Economic Growth
UPT20 League: A Platform for Emerging Talent
The UPT20 League has become a significant avenue for budding cricketers, especially those hailing from smaller towns, while also playing a vital role in boosting the state's economy. Launched in September 2023, the inaugural season showcased numerous local talents alongside established international and state-level players, making it a key scouting ground for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Impact Beyond Cricket
Sanjay Kapoor, Chairman of the UPT20 League Governing Council, emphasized that the league's influence extends beyond the sport itself. It offers valuable opportunities for youth and contributes to the economic development of Uttar Pradesh. "It's not just about cricket; it's about the overall growth of the youth and the economy of Uttar Pradesh," Kapoor stated.
Pathway to the IPL
Kapoor noted that 17 players from the UPT20 League are currently participating in the IPL, expressing optimism that even more players from Uttar Pradesh will reach this elite level. He remarked, "Seventeen players are in the IPL today, and I believe that in the future, a significant portion of IPL players will emerge from UP, given our vast talent pool."
Surge in Viewership
The league has witnessed explosive growth in viewership, surpassing 100 million views this year alone. Kapoor attributed this success to the strategic guidance of Rajeev Shukla, stating, "The UPT20 League has seen remarkable growth in viewership, making it one of the most watched leagues this year."
High-Quality Exposure for Players
Kapoor highlighted the league's commitment to providing players from smaller cities with exposure comparable to that of the IPL. He mentioned, "Players are broadcast on platforms like Star Sports and Jio Live, receiving facilities akin to those in the IPL."
Support from the Government
The Uttar Pradesh government has shown strong support for the league, with key officials attending matches to motivate young athletes. Kapoor noted that one of Rajeev Shukla's main goals is to elevate talented players who might otherwise miss out on opportunities.
Future Plans for a Women's League
Regarding the potential launch of a women's T20 league in Uttar Pradesh, Kapoor mentioned that the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) is exploring this idea but will proceed only after thorough planning and consultation with its Apex Council. "We are committed to ensuring that any new initiative is well-prepared and properly executed," he added.
Aiming for Excellence
Looking forward, Kapoor expressed the UPCA's ambition to position the UPT20 League as one of the premier domestic T20 competitions in the country, right after the IPL. He predicted a significant increase in viewership this season, stating, "This year, we expect the number of viewers to triple, if not quadruple, compared to last season."
