Upcoming Changes to ODI and T20 Cricket Rules Starting Next Month
New Cricket Regulations Set to Take Effect
Starting next month, significant alterations to the rules governing One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 matches will be implemented. The changes will come into effect on July 2 for ODIs and July 10 for T20s. The International Cricket Council (ICC) aims to restore balance between bat and ball through these modifications. The new regulations for Test cricket have already been initiated with the ongoing Bangladesh-Sri Lanka series that began on June 17.
The upcoming ODI series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will mark the introduction of these new rules on July 2, followed by the T20 series starting on July 10.
Key Changes in ODI Rules
The ICC's revisions are specifically targeted at men's cricket. Previously, two balls were used throughout an ODI match from the first to the fiftieth over. However, beginning July 2, only one ball will be utilized after the 34th over, which the bowling team can select according to their preference. In cases where a match is reduced to 25 overs instead of the standard 50, only one ball will be permitted from the start of the innings.
Additionally, teams must inform the officials about their substitute players before the match begins. If a player is injured, the designated substitute will take their place, provided their name has been submitted to the umpires beforehand. Each team can nominate five players for five specific positions.
Substitution Rules Explained
One Wicketkeeper
One Batsman
One Fast Bowler
One Spin Bowler
One All-Rounder
According to the new regulations, if a fast bowler is injured and leaves the field, a replacement fast bowler must come in. An all-rounder cannot substitute for a fast bowler. If the substituted player also becomes injured or is unable to play, the original player can return to the field with the umpire's approval.
